Manchester United are pondering making an offer worth €50 million to sign Lazio star midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

According to the print edition of Il Messaggero (h/t Lazio News 24), Manchester United are considering making an opening offer to Lazio for midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Red Devils are pondering bidding €50 million for the Serbian star, which could be lower than the Italian side’s valuations.

Manchester United’s window has not gone according to their original plans, as the Premier League giants are finding it difficult to acquire their preferred targets easily. So far, Manchester United have signed Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen, while they recently announced the capture of Lisandro Martinez after a complicated chase alongside Arsenal.

Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag now wants a midfielder as a top priority, to bring in some much-needed quality in the area. They have fruitlessly chased Frenkie de Jong for most of this window, who prefers joining another club over them. The Red Devils are thus considering switching their attention to alternatives, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s name being mentioned.

The Serbian was a target for Chelsea and Arsenal earlier, although both London sides turned their focus elsewhere after learning Lazio’s €70 million asking price. The Serie A giants consider the Serbian their most prized asset and may not look to do business for a lesser fee.

However, Manchester United are reportedly considering an opening offer of around €50 million. The proposal may fall well below Lazio’s asking price, and the chances of rejection are high.

With Manchester United needing a star midfielder’s presence in their team, Milinkovic-Savic would be a brilliant addition to Ten Hag’s squad. The 27-year-old Serbian international has previously turned down a move to other Premier League clubs, although the lure of the Red Devils could play differently.

Milinkovic-Savic has two years left on his deal and may look for a new challenge if something substantial is presented on the table. However, the price point might yet again prove problematic in Manchester United’s pursuit of the midfielder. Lazio consider the midfielder a key part of their project under Maurizio Sarri and may not allow him to depart on the cheap.
