Man Utd announce Lisandro Martinez shirt number as he misses out on ‘dream’ digits
Manchester United have confirmed new signing Lisandro Martinez’s shirt number for the Premier League season after his transfer… and it is not the No.21 as expected
Manchester United have confirmed Lisandro Martinez is their new No.6 – inheriting the shirt from Paul Pogba.
The Red Devils confirmed the signing of Martinez, 24, from Ajax for £55million on Wednesday. The Argentina international has agreed a five-year deal at Old Trafford and is Erik ten Hag’s third signing since his appointment after Tyrell Malacia and Christian Eriksen.
Martinez’s new jersey means the No.21 – which he was expected to take – is still available. That’s Frenkie de Jong’s preferred number, of course, meaning his proposed transfer from Barcelona to United may still happen before the window shuts in September.
Martinez wore the No.21 shirt during his three-year spell at Ajax. The No.6 was not available when he signed for the Amsterdam club in 2019 as it was occupied by Donny van de Beek. Davy Klaassen then inherited the No.6 when Van de Beek joined United in 2020.
The defender wore the No.6 during his time at Argentine side Defensa y Justicia. He wore the No.14 at boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys.
Martinez arrives at Old Trafford with a fine CV, winning four trophies at Ajax – including two Eredivisie titles. He is their reigning Player of the Season, winning the award under Ten Hag. He’s also won the Copa America and Finalissima at international level.

“Manchester United I think is one of the best clubs in the world,” Martinez told United’s website in his first interview. “Every player wants to play here. The opportunity was there, so I took it and now I’m really happy to be here.”
On playing under Ten Hag, he added: “I was with him three years at Ajax and I know his style of playing. With him, I improved a lot to be honest. He’s here in Manchester now, so again the opportunity was there and for sure he’s very important in my career.”
Martinez went on to say: “I really like to help my team-mates, but every player – I want the best for everybody. If everybody is fit and everybody is good, then we can win, you know? Because we can win with 11 players if everyone is good, it will help with each other.
“This is one of my first points. Then I’m really aggressive, I love to win, you know? It’s all about winning. I’m a good friend, also. Yeah.”
In a message to the fans, Martinez said: “I will give my 100 per cent every game, every training. For sure, also the team, we will do it. We will play as a team and for sure I know the fans from Manchester United – I watch videos, when I watch a game, some opinions also and the fans from Manchester United are so crazy. But I like that passion because football is about it also.”
Ten Hag added: “He’s a warrior and I think the fans will admire him. He has an attitude, fighting spirit. He brings aggressiveness in the game, in a good way. I think we need that. But he’s also skilful, he can deal with the ball and he’s left-footed.”
