Gary Neville has spotted similarities in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City system and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after the first week of the 2022/23 season.

The pair worked together in Manchester, and Arteta was seen as the heir to Guardiola’s throne after his integral role as assistant manager. The ɢυппeгѕ ‘ boss has now put some of his lessons into practice, producing patterns of play that rival the champions’.

With transfer overlaps between the clubs, including Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer, Arteta has his own free-flowing attack, but with Erling Haaland being the replacement striker for Jesus, there is already a warning for Arsenal to heed.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker scored within 45 minutes of his Premier League debut, converting a penalty that he had won against West Ham, and Neville gave a description of the 22-year-old play that matches his description of Arsenal’s own system.

He said on commentary, “side-foot, power, but it was how he won it that will send shudders through the Premier League. The first-time Manchester City get close to slipping that ball down the side, we’ve talked about the power on the counter-attack, but that could be a familiar celebration.”

Whilst Haaland opening his account is a warning in itself of what could happen this season, the former Manchester United and England fullback was also glowing about Jesus’ work during the Friday night opener, saying, “I think the way in which Arsenal play will mean there is no problem for (Gabriel) Jesus to play in the left channel or the right channel if he sees an opportunity.

“They have the ability to interchange, and that front-four are so exciting. They’ll cause massive problems. They were electric in that first 15-20 minutes, and they will blow teams away. They play in that clever little way, make the extra pass, those little underlaps and overlaps at the edge of the box.

“Arteta obviously working with Pep Guardiola (had influence), and Arteta said something before the game which will stick with me. He said, ‘I feel they’re now at the level I wanted.”

Part of Jesus’ determination to leave the Etihad stadium this window was due to Haaland’s new presence, and he now has the chance to become the main man and the primary source of Arsenal’s goals, a prospect that has excited fans.
